The new Volvo XC90, to be revealed in August, comes with a range of world firsts that may make it one of the safest cars in the world.

The seven seat, all-wheel drive premium SUV includes a run-off road protection package and an autobrake at intersection capability, both of which are world firsts, on top of the standard safety package.

Safe Positioning detects the situation in a run-off road situation and tightens the seatbelts in response to keep occupants in a safe position. Energy-absorbing functionality between seat and seat frame reduces spinal injuries by cushioning the vertical forces during a hard impact.

The Lane Keeping Aid applies extra steering torque if the vehicle is about to leave the lane unintentionally; and Driver Alert Control detects and warns inattentive or tired drivers. It is complemented by Rest Stop Guidance, which directs drivers to the nearest rest area.

There is also an autobrake at intersections feature that detects potential crashes when the vehicle turns in front of an oncoming car and brakes automatically to avoid a collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash.

Other safety features include:

  • Rearward-facing radars that detect impending rear impacts and tightens seatbelts and flashes warnings to the approaching vehicle. Brakes are also activated to reduce impact. New seat design, combined with Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), reduces whiplash injuries from rear impacts.
  • Latest generation Roll Stability Control uses sensors to calculate risk of rolling over. Inevitable rollover activates Inflatable Curtains across all three rows to prevent head injuries, and pyrotechnical safety belt pretensioners.
  • City Safety autobraking detects and reacts to high risks of collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists.
  • Extended Road Sign Information technology
  • Blind Spot Information technology detects and alerts drivers of vehicles in blind spots
  • Queue Assist controls acceleration, braking and steers in slow-moving queues

The vehicle is also made with hot-formed boron steel, the strongest currently used in the industry, designed to maximum occupant protection in all types of situations.
