AMA Group

Staff retention is vital for large organisations such as AMA Group where some churn is inevitable. The judges were impressed with the many initiatives put in place.

A MA Group has a team of over 3,400 people across Australia and New Zealand. ‘Together We Do It Right’ is the motto. AMA Group listens to its team and conducts annual ‘Our Voice’ team member engagement surveys providing the opportunity for staff to tell them what they think. The feedback is used to shape initiatives to support and develop the team.

The organisation offers a range of resources, including access to a confidential employee assistance program which provides guidance for both personal and professional challenges. Recognising the importance of mental health, AMA Group has implemented a network of trained Mental Health First Aiders and actively supports mental health initiatives such as R U OK? Day and Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds. These programs, along with annual flu vaccinations and access to defibrillators at every site, exemplify AMA Group’s commitment to employee wellness.

In addition to well-being support, AMA Group provides a wide array of benefits designed to foster a sense of belonging and pride among its employees. These include an annual awards program to honour excellence, and service recognition awards that celebrate long-standing contributions. The company also offers financial incentives like gift vouchers, paid leave for emergency service volunteers, and a ‘Refer a Friend’ program to reward team members who assist in recruitment. Employees may access options such as compressed work weeks, salary packaging, and discounts through the Maxxia Rewards Program.

Employees are actively encouraged to engage with their communities. Local grassroots sponsorships and fundraisers reflect the interests and passions of AMA’s teams. Key initiatives include support for NRL Cowboys House, which supports indigenous students, and partnerships with organisations like Set to Succeed and Share the Dignity, which align with the company’s mission to make a positive community impact.

Employee development is also a cornerstone of AMA Group’s culture. Through a structured Leadership Development Program, team members gain access to specialised training that addresses core management skills and safety practices. The Frontline Leaders Program spans multiple modules, from building workplace culture to mental health awareness, designed to equip leaders across business units with the tools to succeed. AMA Group further invests in training with over 440 apprentices in the apprenticeship program, which includes quarterly mentoring sessions and specialised training.

Safety at AMA Group is embedded in every level of the organisation. Through its Take the LEAD program, AMA Group empowers all team members to champion a culture of safety by engaging in practices that prioritise proactive and preventive measures. The program outlines fundamental actions, from regular safety checks and PPE provision to an injury management system that promotes swift recovery.

The company has also invested heavily in I-CAR training with several sites now I-CAR Gold and a special cap for Platinum technicians as well as a $500 voucher each year if they retain Platinum status.
