ANCAP has supported a call from the NRMA to address young driver safety issues through registration incentives.
The come home safe report issued by the NRMA pushed a number of key recommendations intended to keep young drivers safe.
One of the recommendations called for provisional drivers to be offered a registration discount if they register a vehicle with a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
ANCAP CEO James Goodwin said the move would provide incentives for young drivers to travel in safer vehicles.
“Our young and provisionally licensed drivers are some of our most at-risk on the roads.
“Incentives to make it more affordable for them to travel in safer cars is to be commended.
“We tend to see younger and less experienced drivers travel in older, less safe vehicles which presents a double-vulnerability.
“This is as much an affordability issue as it is a safety issue and we must look at all available options.”
