How did you get started in the industry?
My journey into the automotive industry began during my early school years. I had a keen interest in mechanical devices and vehicles, which led me to buy old BMX bikes from garage sales. I enjoyed refurbishing them, giving them a fresh coat of paint, and then selling them at a profit. As I grew older, my passion for cars grew, and I started applying the same approach to buying, repairing, and selling cars. By the age of 16, I was already certain that I wanted to pursue a career working with cars.
What do you do now?
Currently, I hold the position of general manager at Sheen Panel Service. As the general manager, I am responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the company, ensuring that we deliver high-quality panel services to our customers, managing the team, and making strategic decisions to drive the business forward.
What do you most like about the industry?
One aspect of the automotive industry that continues to fascinate me is witnessing the process of taking a damaged vehicle and restoring it to its pre-accident condition. There's a sense of satisfaction in seeing the transformation, knowing that our team's skills and efforts have made it possible for someone to regain their beloved vehicle in its former glory.
What do you most dislike about the industry?
One thing that disappoints me about the industry is the negative attitude some individuals have towards young people who want to pursue a career in this field. They discourage them by saying that they would be better off doing something else. I believe there is a misconception about the earning potential and career prospects within the trade industry, especially for skilled tradesmen. I feel that these negative perceptions need to be addressed to attract more young talent to the field.
Who do you most admire in the industry?
I hold a deep admiration for the skilled tradesmen who mentored me and taught me the proper techniques for repairing cars. Their expertise and dedication not only shaped my career but also instilled in me a passion for doing the job right. I owe a lot to their guidance and knowledge, as it has been instrumental in my success within the industry.
Cars! Tell us about your first car, current car, and dream car.
My first car, which I acquired at the age of 14, was a Holden HQ. It was an exciting experience for me as it marked the beginning of my journey into the automotive world. At present, I am fortunate to own three distinct cars. Firstly, a 1971 Holden HQ GTS coupe, which I cherish for its classic design and historical significance. Secondly, a 1970 Holden HG Premier equipped with a powerful LS twin-turbo engine, which adds a modern twist to a classic model. And lastly, a 1973 Valiant Charger featuring a late model Hemi motor, showcasing my appreciation for combining the old and the new in automotive engineering.
As for my dream car, it would be a Ford Falcon XY GTHO phase 3. The GTHO is a legendary vehicle known for its performance and racing heritage, and owning one would be a dream come true for any car enthusiast like myself.
