Like many businesses in this industry the baton has been passed down through the family. Warren McMartin is managing director at the country's largest collision repair supplier, SAPE.

How did you get started in the industry?

I was 21 and had just finished my apprenticeship in printing at the Melbourne College of Printing and Graphic arts when my father’s manager, Branka James, reached out and asked I would consider moving back to Sydney and working as a sales rep for SAPE (my father would have nudged her to do so).

From that position I worked through both Sydney Auto’s and Automotive Colour and equipment, as rep, warehouse manager, sales manager and branch Manager.

What do you do now?

Now, as my father has taken a small step away, I am the Managing Director for the SAPE group of companies.

What do you most like about the industry?

This industry has some of the best characters in Australia and there is never a dull day. The industry is hard on all sides and unless you have been brought up in it or have done your time properly, you will never understand it and won’t be around long.

What do you most dislike about the industry?

The fixed price repair method, the common goal for everyone is to repair cars correctly at a fair price.

Who do you most admire in the industry?

I have met some great people in this industry and do not wish to single out anyone.

Cars! tell us - first car, current car, dream car?

First car was a 1977, Ford Cortina - TE, Monza Red, 6 cylinder and 4 speed Manual, I installed the “Dukes of Hazzard” Dixie air horns. Some of my best driving was done in that car.

Now, I drive a BMW X6 M50i. Beautiful car with everything I need to be sitting in traffic.

Dream Car - Holden Torana SLR5000, A9X, in Barbados Green with a black bonnet.
