After more than eight years at the helm, Paul Unerkov will retire as the CEO of the Motor Trade Association at the end of the year.
Unerkov said that the industry organisation was in a stronger position than ever. “The MTA has existed for 96 years and the organisation is in good health with a strong plan for the future and a capable team which will be able to successfully deliver it,” he said.
“For me the timing is right and it has been an honour to support our members and industry as well as provide apprentices with the opportunity to get their start in a rewarding career.
“After 30 years in the automotive industry, I am looking forward to focussing on some exciting new plans and projects.”
MTA Chair Frank Agostino thanked Unerkov for his exemplary service and leadership and wished him well for his future endeavours. “He has brought unrivalled retail experience to his role and has been a fierce advocate for the automotive industry,” Agostino said.
Agostino said the MTA Board had unanimously endorsed a succession plan to promote Darrell Jacobs, current General Manager of Automotive Skills Development, as CEO on Unerkov’s retirement.
“Jacobs has two decades of automotive experience and will provide the MTA with a strong knowledge base and connection to industry,” he said.
“As an association we are privileged to have the talent of employees within our ranks to be able to promote from within. This is a testament to Unerkov who has developed an excellent leadership team.”
Jacobs said he was looking forward to his new role: “I am excited to be leading the MTA through the next phase of recovery from COVID-19 and the innovation revolution that is sweeping our industry,” he said.
“We must continue supporting our members, address critical issues such as skill shortages and drive the sector as a vital part of our local economy.”
Jacobs holds a Bachelor of Management (Marketing), an MBA and is a Graduate of the Australia Institute of Company Directors. He has worked at the Commonwealth Bank, Simplot and most recently at Wendy’s as the National Marketing Manager, Mitsubishi as Head of Marketing and General Manager positions spanning membership and training at the MTA.
